How I Discovered Green Home Improvements

Written by green1 on Feb 21st, 2008 | Filed under: General Information

Every month I get about a dozen or so trade publications that I read from cover to cover.  I love to keep track of current home improvement trends!  Over the past few years I have been seeing more and more “green” products entering the market place.  For the most part it seems like the trend has caught on in Canada and on our west coast.  On the east coast it seems that “green” is all about using the light bulbs that save you money.  Once in a while I over hear people complaining about “green paint” and how it cost $10 more a gallon and how it must not be any good.  I get a good laugh out of this, if it cost more it can’t be any good?

For years I have sold vinyl replacement windows  in order to help people save on the heating and cooling bills.  Up until a year ago I never thought that I was actually selling a green product.  While nobody can argue that the manufacturing process for vinyl does not get a 5 star green award (doesn’t exist), however the benefits are nothing shy of being green.  If a good vinyl window is installed it should last a lifetime without killing any trees.  The window will save on heating and cooling bills and the fuel needed to deliver the heating fuel.  The windows will also save carpets, furniture and window coverings from harmful UV rays thus giving them a longer life and save some landfill space.  I’ll go on about replacement windows  at a later date, my point is that once I discovered that I sell a green product it turned me on to the whole “green thing”.

Last fall I attended an open house in Braintree MA for a company that supplies green products to the greater Boston area.  (insert their info here)  It really opened my eyes to see how many green products I can provide my clients for every room in their home.  From green kitchen cabinets to green area rugs you can really have a house that contains 100% green products.  This is where this blog (the website you are looking at) comes into play, it is a way for me to show people some green choices for their home improvement projects.
